Manuel Carmona appointed interim director of public health

PASADENA, Calif.—With the recent announcement of Pasadena Department of Public Health Director and Health Officer Dr. Ying-Ying Goh taking a year off for a prestigious fellowship in Washington, D.C., Acting City Manager Cynthia Kurtz has named Public Health Deputy Manager Manuel Carmona to serve as Acting Director of Public Health.

Carmona has served as Deputy Director of Public Health since January 2020 and has led the department’s non-clinical operations and provided administrative and financial management guidance in support of the health department’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has developed and maintained critical community programs in the areas of violence prevention; health equity; and maternal, adolescent and child health. Carmona also led special initiatives, including strategic planning and reaccreditation, and served as co-chair of the Pasadena Elderly and Dependent Adult Liaison Committee (PEDAL).

“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as Acting Director of Public Health and lead such a committed and talented public health team. I am confident in our ability to continue our work to preserve and protect public health in the Pasadena community,” Carmona said.

Carmona joined the Pasadena Public Health Department in 2014 as a management analyst, where he led the administrative and financial division. Previously, he worked for larger and smaller cities in a range of municipal operations, including human resources, economic development, code enforcement, parks and recreation. He hopes to complete a master’s degree in public health from the University of Washington this fall. He already holds a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science in Community and Regional Development from the University of California, Davis.

Carmona is an alumnus of Health Equity Awakened and Leadership Pasadena. In 2020, he attended the National Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health (NLAPH). He currently serves on the Board of Leadership Pasadena and Central Altadena Little League.

Carmona is originally from the San Gabriel Valley and lives in Altadena with his wife and two children. He is a sports enthusiast and enjoys camping, hiking and fishing.
