He admitted he still finds a lot of activities “fun”, including meeting fans “because they’re always so nice”.

John, 74, added when asked if he liked to review his career: “Talking about my own films? God no. I hate that. I don’t want to do this. They speak for themselves.

“I am unable to watch most of my own films. I immediately become very critical of what I see.

“I’m like, ‘Why did I do this? I know better. Go on.’ You know, ‘I made a mistake there, I was too lazy, too this, too that.’

“Anyway, I don’t want to talk to you about that. These things are feelings that I have inside. I’m not going to tell you what I think.

He added that he was “still working on stuff”, but said: “I have nothing to announce.”

Opening up on why he quit making movies, he said: “It was just a high point. On “Ghosts of Mars”, I was exhausted. That was the big problem.

“I remember seeing a (featurette) backstage, and it showed me on set working, sitting in the scoring session. God, I had aged.

“Tired and old. And I thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore. It was too hard. For me, it was no longer worth it.

“And I didn’t mean that about the movies. Movies are my first love, my life. But, anyway, why am I telling you all this? It’s not something I want to talk about.

He continued looking back, “I don’t look at things like I’ve achieved anything. I don’t see it that way. I love everything I’ve done. I love all the movies I’ve done, but I also love to stop and relax, watch basketball, for example, or play video games.

John, who has agreed to serve as composer and executive producer for David Gordon Green’s new ‘Halloween’ sequel cycle, including this fall’s ‘Halloween Ends’, added of his dislike of film criticism: ‘A minute you’re a genius, and then another minute you’re a bum Well, both things aren’t true.
