Australia’s largest cancer care provider brings quality cancer care to patients around the world with Macquarie Cloud Services

Icon Group taps Macquarie to navigate global expansion and changing regulations in the pharmaceutical industry with a secure Azure environment and local expertise

Macquarie Cloud Services (MCS), part of Macquarie Telecom Group (ASX:MAQ), has signed a new agreement with one of Australia’s largest comprehensive cancer care providers, Icon Group (Icon), to manage its platforms via a Microsoft Azure environment. Since MCS’s engagement, Icon has navigated global expansion with secure, scalable services and met new regulations in the pharmaceutical industry under tight deadlines.

Icon Group provides all aspects of cancer care including medical oncology, radiation oncology, hematology, research, pharmacy and chemotherapy to provide end-to-end service to patients. The group has long relied on flexible and innovative technology to deliver patient care, however, according to Icon IT infrastructure manager Mark Holmes, recent expansion into Singapore, mainland China, Hong Kong and in New Zealand required the move to a secure and scalable solution. environment.

“We knew we wanted to be on Azure, not only to provide disaster recovery and service availability across multiple geographies, but also to navigate the highly regulated pharmaceutical industry,” he said. “We needed an expert partner, who had solid experience in carrying out a large-scale project.”

Icon Group selected Macquarie, its long-term telecommunications and networking provider, to facilitate migration to an Azure environment and provide ongoing architecture, network, security and power reviews. Mark said the team’s expertise was crucial in ensuring the migration ran smoothly despite the ongoing covid lockdown periods, which meant designing, delivering and managing remotely.

“Macquarie experts advised rolling out the migration over two timeframes. The first included services we had hosted on our cloud platform ‘Launch’ to the more scalable Azure, which falls under the purview of the TGA and requires a specific access for audit. The second track needed to work within a tight two-month timeframe, as it contained workloads supporting pharmacy dispensing that were subject to external regulatory changes.

“Macquarie was able to work quickly to deliver these services and set them up in an automated fashion. This allowed us to maintain that pace and complete the project in a compressed timeframe.”

Developing technical expertise as industry tackles skills shortages

Mark went on to say that Icon’s experience with Macquarie has also helped develop in-house technical talent and leverage trusted expertise in the cloud space and beyond, both crucial considerations in the current Australian climate. of shortage of technical skills.

“We see the need for our cloud skills to continue to develop internally, and as such we have recruited a lead cloud engineer who works with the Macquarie team to progress and refine designs. This allows for a natural progression of skills for the rest of the team.

“It really makes a difference that Macquarie is going the extra mile. We are using the group’s data center campus as our colocation facility in Sydney and find the team is better skilled and knowledgeable than other vendors’ remote services. .

“I am convinced that everything can be done remotely, that tasks can be delegated and that we are well supported. As a healthcare company, our top priority is the safety of our patients, their data and the quality of our clinical team’s processes, Macquarie has improved the security and efficiency of our IT infrastructure and cloud-based systems to ensure we continue to provide the best care possible.”

Naran McClung, Head of Azure at MCS, said, “It was critical that this project materialize on time, not only to keep services going for some of society’s most vulnerable, but to ensure the highest levels of compliance. high in a heavily regulated industry.

“Finding a true technology partner in Macquarie has enabled Icon Group to build a cloud infrastructure that will serve their continued international expansion. This partnership provides the confidence to work closely with Icon’s management, supporting their growth plans for the ‘business both in terms of scope and services offered.”
